"Just stop using pencils Naomi, try something different." a school teacher of mine back in the early 2000s. You may have noticed that I love using coloured pencils!
It's a versatile medium that equates to great detail, rich colours and plenty of layering. Working in coloured pencils for many years has allowed my style to develop and become refined.
I started up my art business whilst studying Illustration at University back in 2013. The nervous feeling of showing my first customer their pet portrait will always stay with me.
I have been incredibly fortunate to sell original artworks, offer an extensive range of merchandise, exhibit up and down the country and teach hundreds of people, of all ages and abilities.
There is no doubt that our beloved pets are a huge part of who we are. They bring people together. Give us routine and purpose. Offer comfort and support in so many ways.
It's the little things I love about a furry companion like when their eyes light up when we reach for a treat. Their gorgeous colours glowing in the summer sun. Their hilarious antics and forever loyal nature.
Whether they are by our side right now or they live within fond memories made together. We have an unconditional love for our pets and often photographs just don't do them justice.
A one-off drawing goes the extra mile to keep our beautiful animals close by. It's the personalised touch that sparks conversations, the statement piece of artwork that proudly hangs in our homes. A bespoke portrait for us to cherish for years to come.
In my studio with some music on or maybe even a podcast, a cup of tea and surrounded by a range of beautiful pencils...
That right there is my happy place.
My illustrative style has become a unique part of my work and I love expressing the emotion of the animal. Since University, I have been passionate to raise awareness within my wildlife portraits.
Over time I have built a portfolio of drawings that for the majority, do not include the background of the subject. This is to ensure the focal point and to allow the negative space to speak for itself.
I pride myself on working closely with my customers so if you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to email me and I will be more than happy to help. Naomi - NRJArt@outlook.com
